Roses II
Roses was created by Van Gogh in 1889, near the end of his treatment at the Saint-Rémy-de-Provence asylum in France. It is considered one of the most poetic masterpieces among his still-life works.
The original pigments used for the rose petals were pink, but over time they have faded into the soft green and ivory tones we see today.
The gentle background color accentuates the purity and lightness of the flowers. While retaining Van Gogh’s characteristic brushstrokes, the painting is no longer as intense or swirling as his landscapes, but instead more delicate and gentle.
Roses symbolizes love, purity, hope, and vitality—like a tender blessing from Van Gogh for recovery and renewal.
